I RECENTLY went searching for red wines that weren’t simple to find. They weren’t desirable grand crus from Burgundy or cult red wines from Napa. My search was focused on something far more common yet apparently a lot more evasive: a great wine for $10 a bottle.
There are lots of white wines at this cost and lower, however I enforced specific criteria: The red wine had to be more than some grocery-store staple produced in a wine factory in oceanic quantities; I likewise desired a wine that wasn’t just drinkable but had some character and even a bit of history. Every bottle I attempted was priced around the $10 mark. I covered a reasonable swath of the world in my search for bargain red wines, from Chile and Argentina to South Africa, Spain, Italy, France, New Zealand and Australia. Unfortunately, I could not discover any red wines made in the U.S. that fit all my criteria.
